Session 4: Transportation Management
主讲人1:Ling Wang
主讲题目:Implementation of Active Traffic Management Strategies for Safety of Congested Expressway Weaving Segments
主讲人简介:
Ling Wang received the Master degree from Tongji University in 2013 and the Bachelor degree from Hunan University in 2010. She received her Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Central Florida (UCF), USA, in 2016. Her research interests include traffic management and control, big data analysis, traffic simulation, and traffic safety.
From 2010 to 2013, she was a Research Assistant with Tongji University. During her Ph.D. course (2013-2016), she had been working as a Graduate Research Assistant at UCF. After her graduation, she conducted multiple projects as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. She has authored and co-authored 15 scholarly articles. Her award and honor include Best Paper Award in the 14th World Conference on Transport Research and the Anne Brewer Scholarship from ITS Florida.
主讲内容简介:
In weaving segments, traffic merges, diverges, and weaves in a limited space. These traffic maneuvers might result in high crash hazards. In order to improve the safety of congested expressway weaving segments, various Active Traffic Management (ATM) strategies in microsimulation were tested. Crash odds and the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) were used to evaluate the impact of ATM strategies on traffic safety. The crash odds were calculated based on the real-time safety analysis model for weaving segments. The strategies included ramp metering (RM), variable speed limit (VSL), and an integrated RM and VSL (RM-VSL). Overall, the results showed that the ATM strategies were able to improve the safety of the studied weaving segment. The modified ALINEA RM algorithms, which took both lane occupancy and safety into consideration, outperformed the traditional ALINEA algorithm. The results showed that both the location and the speed value of VSL were important. The VSL installed at the upstream of the weaving segment better enhanced the safety than the VSL set at the downstream, and lower upstream VSL would better improve the safety of the whole weaving segment. In the consolidated RM-VSL strategy, the modified ALINEA RM was adjusted according to the queue length to prevent long queues on ramps. The results proven that the consolidated RM-VSL strategy reduced both conflict count and crash odds.
主讲人2:Quanquan Chen
主讲题目:The Characteristics and Impacts of Last Mile Delivery:A New York City Case Study
主讲人简介
Quanquan Chen is a Ph.D candidate in the City College of New York, USA, and defensed her dissertation in April, 2017. She received a master in Logistics Engineering from Southwest Jiaotong University, China, and a bachelor degree in Transportation Planning from Central South University, China.
Quanquan contributed substantially to a variety of projects from UTRC-Region 2 and Metro Freight center, primarily focused in the area of urban freight/city logistics. During the five years in City College of New York, she has conducted qualitative policy analysis, and employed a variety of quantitative analysis methods, including R, GIS, and Macro in Excel for mining of open “big” datasets.Currently, she defensed her dissertation work, which includes development of a micro-simulation model to evaluate the impacts of residential freight delivery activity on local traffic conditions. Her future research interests include multimodal interaction, last mile delivery, and freight policy/data analysis.
主讲内容简介:
The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate strategic recommendations for reducing the impacts of home delivery in residential areas. In this study, challenges of last-mile residential delivery in New York City were identified by data mining in multiple big-datasets and confirmed by field observation in selected areas. Field observations revealed unique operational characteristics of residential delivery vehicles compared to business related delivery vehicles.Traffic and environment simulation models were employed to estimate the impacts associated with increasing residential freight movements. Based on the analysis of problem causes and evaluation of impact trade-offs, this study proposes management policies for better accommodating increasing residential freight demand.
